BIOS TEST
Test2000 is a shareware utility which automatically tests your PC to see if it is Y2K compliant. It is free to be copied, distributed in its complete, unmodified form.
You can visit the Y2000FIX web site at www.y2000fix.com
An alternative way of testing you computer to see if it is Y2K compliant is to follow the simple steps below.
1. Restart your PC in DOS mode. Do not use a DOS window or Real Mode from Windows 95.
2. At the DOS prompt, change the date to 31/12/99 by typing
date 31/12/99 [rtn]
3. Now change the time to 23:59 by typing
time 23:59:59 [rtn]
4. Wait a couple of seconds, then type
date [rtn]
the response should be 01/01/2000
5. Restart the PC in DOS. Again do not start windows. Type
date [rtn]
if the response is 01/01/2000, then your PC will cope with the date change. You still need to check individual software packages though to see if the PC recognises 2000 as a leap year.
6. If the response is 01/01/1980 or 04/01/1980, the internal clock and BIOS have not recognised the millennium date change. If this happens, at the DOS prompt type
date 01/01/2000 [rtn]
Now restart your PC in DOS mode. Do not run windows.
7. At the DOS prompt type
date [rtn]
If the response is 01/01/2000 then you know that your PC is not going to handle the date change automatically, although when the date comes for real you can force it to change using this procedure. If the response is still not 01/01/2000, you need a BIOS update. In this case, you should contact your supplier.
